Holidays to Barbados
There is an island where Caribbean charm meets British customs, tradition blends with modernity and raw natural tropical beauty mixes with resorts of innovative architecture and luxurious amenities - on your holiday in Barbados you will find this land of contrasts. Barbados holidays are a good opportunity to experience the friendliness of the welcoming people of the island, always ready to start a chat or a party. You will also discover stunning sandy beaches of turquoise waters and incredible reefs in Barbados, the ultimate Caribbean retreat.
10 good reasons to take a holiday in Barbados
- Incredible weather
- Stunning beaches
- Superb restaurants
- Festive nightlife (on south of island)
- Warm and friendly people
- Fantastic hotels and accommodation
- Excellent service
- Great watersports
- Brilliant shopping in Bridgetown (with duty free)
- More than 1,000 rum shops
Weddings and honeymoons are highly popular in this paradise island. Warm weather, incredible beaches and landscapes will surely make these occasions truly unforgettable. Britons will also find many things that will remind them of home, but certainly not the weather.
The Atlantic East of the island
Barbados is the most easterly of the Caribbean islands lying in the path of cooling trade winds. Although the island measures only 21 miles x 14 miles, its shores are blessed with almost 60 miles of shimmering white sands. The dramatic, windswept east coast is washed by Atlantic waves and dotted with huge boulders. This spectacular and rugged scenery is a photographer's dream as well as providing some good surfing opportunities. The island's location out in the Atlantic Ocean allows waves to travel vast distances before finally unloading all their power. A wave can travel nearly three thousand miles in the open ocean, undisturbed by sandbars, reefs or land, before it breaks on Barbados’s eastern shore. The main town on the east side is Bathsheba, from where (if you’re fortunate enough) you’ll catch sight of the Soup Bowl, the island’s biggest wave. Watching the swells curl into massive walls of water is pure magic, even if no-one is surfing.
The Caribbean West of the island
The palm-edged Caribbean beaches of the west coast are perfect for swimming, snorkelling and sunbathing. The west coast offers white sand beaches lapped with warm turquoise waters. Hotels in Barbados on this balmier coast are among some of the most sophisticated in all the Caribbean. It is possible to find everything you might want or need in your resort, but it’s worth visiting nearby towns and villages to soak up the local flavour South of the capital, Bridgetown, the coast boasts palm fringed beaches and a gently foaming surf that produces a combination favoured by windsurfers and beach lovers alike. The island has its very own gold coast for swimmers named after the fabulous sands. Visitors come from all over the world to take part in windsurfing, surfing and sail boarding competitions. Sports fans can also play golf and tennis and watch some of the world’s best cricketers.
Things to do and see whilst on holiday
Many of the grand homes built by the sugar kings are open to the public. Plantation mansions such as Sam Lord’s Castle contain many of their original gilt and mahogany fittings. You can still see a working sugar plantation on Arbib Nature and Heritage trail and the island is perfect for exploration on foot. If you prefer formal settings, there are the famous cliff-set Andromeda Gardens. Some of the finest hotels and apartments on the island are positioned in beautifully planned and lushly maintained tropical landscapes.- Historic Plantation House tours
- Atlantis Submarines
- Harbour Lights beach extravaganza
The capital Bridgetown offers good shopping. You can buy virtually anything but star purchases must be alcohol (rum in particular), wood carvings and clothing.
Weather
The Caribbean is subject to a hurricane season which runs from 1st June to 30th November. 80% of the storm weather activity usually occurs during August to October with a peak around mid September. The centre of most storms miss completely misses Barbados and there are usually only minor disruption to weather conditions. There are a few each year that will pass through giving rise to stronger weather conditions that normal, but by and large, holidays to the island do not suffer from hurricane disruption.
