A renowned retreat since 1961, the resort was rebuilt and reopened in March 2001 after an expenditure of several hundred million dollars. This hotel attracts vacationers from around the world who are accustomed to pampering service and content with understated opulence. Behind the gates lies a tranquil green haven of golf, sunning and swimming, fine dining, and high-tech amenities. An immense three-level pool complex is terraced into a green hillside and includes a rock-grotto waterfall. Fronting the hotel is a quarter-mile beach of fine, white sand furnished with blue umbrellas and thickly cushioned lounge chairs. A two-story, 45,000-square-foot health-and-beauty spa includes exceptional facilities such as an "ice room," aromatic vertical-and-horizontal showers, a jet-blitz hydrotherapy room, treatment suites with private garden-courtyards containing lounge chairs and hydro pools." Arriving early at L'Acajou, the resort's second-floor, fine-dining restaurant ensures a choice table for sunset and Caribbean breezes.

Accommodations

The resort offers 112 guestrooms and suites in a creamy coral-stone colonial-plantation Palladian-style "great house" consisting of four wings ranging from two to four stories capped with wood-shingle roofs. The building features white balcony railings, pale marble floors, original art, and spiral staircases with black wrought-iron railings topped in polished brass. Semi-hidden courtyards provide unexpected pleasure. Orchids contribute pale colors. Rooms and suites include 43- or 53-inch plasma televisions, DVD/CD players (DVDs and CDs are available for complimentary use), and electronic touch pads for control of drapes, sheer curtains, air conditioning, and lighting. Other features include high-speed Internet connections and parabolic speakers on verandas. Featherbeds top foot-thick mattresses. Marble bathrooms include multi-spray stall showers and separate tubs, heated mirrors, scales, and twin-sink vanities. Cream-colored marble floors, coral-stone crown molding, and mahogany, hazelnut, and rattan furniture create a tropical-colonial ambience.

Restaurants & Bars

All guests have the option of a complimentary full English breakfast served each morning in the Banyan Blue restaurant.
L'Acajou - French for "mahogany" in tribute to the mahogany-tree grove fronting the resort. Located on second floor with sea views. Two open-air levels of seating featuring hibiscus-print banquettes and semi-circular booths. Table candles and oil lamps on walls. Adjacent bar/lounge. Choices includes Atlantic-salmon ravioli, saffron risotto, spicy crab cakes, pan-fried foie gras, shellfish bisque, seared snapper, Thai red-curry chicken, roasted lobster. Dinner only. Dress code: long pants, collared shirts for men.
Banyan Blue - Beach-level, marble-floor restaurant with sea view. Dining room with dark rattan chairs around wrought-iron tables with glass tops, terrace seating under white umbrellas. Breakfast, lunch, dinner. Lunch menu features flying-fish sandwiches, wood-oven pizza, saltfish cakes. Á la carte dinner choices such as Asian braised lamb shanks, baked lobster, chicken curry. Theme buffets Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday nights. Dinner dress code: long pants, collared shirts for men.
The Country Club Restaurant - Located in golf clubhouse high above coastline, with sweeping sea view. All-day menu of salads, sandwiches, Caribbean items.
The resort's bars include Monkey Bar, which features cocktails, caviar, champagnes, aged cognacs and rums, and cigars, a Beach Bar, and a Pool Bar.

Activities

The resort contains three golf courses, a 450-yard driving range, and an immense clubhouse containing a pro shop, a restaurant and bar, lounge areas, locker facilities, and private lounging rooms equipped with large plasma-screen televisions. Shoes and clubs are available for rent. Golf carts fitted with a Global Positioning System (GPS) are included in green fees. In addition to displaying distance and position, the system offers tips on playing each hole and can be used to order drinks and snacks. Designed by Tom Fazio, The Green Monkey championship course was carved out of a coral-stone quarry and features abrupt elevation changes and panoramic sea views. Named after Barbados' famed Green Monkeys, the course includes a bunker containing a grass island carved in a monkey's shape. Also designed by Fazio, the Country Club course features open fairways, five lakes, sea views, and green monkeys who inhabit gullies around the 18-hole championship layout. The Old Nine is the estate's first course, a 9-hole layout featuring tree-lined fairways. Play on nine lighted, artificial-grass tennis courts is complimentary. Complimentary water-sports equipment includes snorkeling gear, sailboats, Hobie Cats, and kayaks. The recreational activities listed below are available near the hotel; fees may apply.
