Description / Location
Recognized as the Caribbean's oldest continuously operating hotel, this resort stands on a cliff above a picture-perfect beach, where pink-tinged white sands meet the azure Atlantic. The resort maintains its original 1887 ambience, exemplified by the lobby's creamy coral-stone walls and manicured, sculpture-dotted grounds. The hotel is perfect for those seeking tranquillity, luxury and understated elegance.
Overlooking the ocean, the cliff-top lap pool features Roman-style columns and a marble sundeck. The resort boasts an additional pool area, which is a 1.5 acre multi-cascading pool complex, with a spectacular setting against the rugged cliff face of the Atlantic. A beach elevator takes you down to the world famous Crane Beach. The complex will include a roofless 19th-century building with spa pool, and an 18th-century stable housing a pool bar facility.
The Cranes marketplace featuring shops, boutiques, and conference centre is due to open in late 2008.
Accommodations
This resort offers 202 residences, all with kitchens or kitchenettes, in four apricot-colored colonial-style buildings of two to five stories. All buildings have elevators, except the two-story building, which was the original 1887 hotel. Residences feature large patios or balconies with dining sets and views of the ocean or gardens. Colonial-style mahogany furniture includes hand-carved four-poster king beds. Marble bathrooms contain two-person jetted tubs and glass stall showers. Coral-stone walls, bleached-wood ceilings, cedar or stone tile floors with floral area rugs, and overstuffed seating covered in white canvas create a high-style tropical ambience. Walls display reproductions of paintings of The Crane and surroundings; the artist was a guest here in 1888. Additional features include complimentary high-speed Internet access, DVD/CD players, bathrobes, ceiling fans, and air conditioning. Smoking is permitted only on patios and balconies.
Restaurants & Bars
L'Azure - Open-air dining room and deck providing panoramic ocean view. Windows set in coral-stone arches. Classic and Caribbean cuisine. Á la carte service, including breakfast. Lunch/dinner menu featuring fish, lobster, steak, pasta, rack of lamb. Sandwiches, burgers at lunch, also. Live music six nights weekly. Sunday buffet breakfast featuring gospel singers followed by Bajan (Barbadian) lunch buffet with steel band.
Zen - Cliff-edge, air-conditioned Thai/Japanese restaurant. Lily pond, window wall with panoramic ocean view. Sushi bar, tatami room, private dining rooms with sliding rice-paper doors. Black-lacquer furniture. Slate floor. Displays of antique samurai suite, Japanese wedding gown. Open for lunch and dinner. Dress code: long pants for men.
Pool/Lobby Bar - Two-sided bar serving pool and lobby. Open mid-morning to late night.
Activities
Below the cliff, a 250-m (273-yd) coral-sand beach faces the Atlantic Ocean. Wading depth extends out approximately 68.5 m (75 yds). An offshore reef tames ocean swells in most weather. Umbrellas and lounge chairs dot the beach. Guests enjoy complimentary use of boogie boards. Overlooking the ocean from the cliff, the 26 x 12.25-m (85 x 40-ft) pool is fronted by Roman-style columns and surrounded by a marble sundeck with umbrellas and thickly cushioned lounge chairs. The resort offers a gym, grocery delivery service and full service concierge. The 18-hole Barbados Golf Club is 12 km (7.5 mi) away.
