4.5* The Royal Hideaway
 

Description / Location

Spread over five hectares (13 acres) of landscaped grounds containing ponds, fountains, gently flowing artificial rivers spanned by white bridges, and white benches beside winding paths, this resort offers adults a tranquil haven (guests must be 13 years or older). Guestrooms are located in 11 yellow, English Colonial-style villas graced with decorative white balconies. Each villa surrounds an open-air courtyard containing a burbling fountain strewn with blossoms. A concierge attends each villa from a courtyard desk.  An infinity pool on the beach offers a spot for relaxation while next to it, an activities pool (with nearby hot-water spa tub) allows for volleyball and other games. Three more "relaxation pools" in secluded locations have sundecks and are paired with cool-water spa tubs. Plus the health-and-beauty spa offers a relaxation pool open to all guests without charge. Beside the Caribbean's turquoise water and along the powdery, white sand are palm trees and canopies over sun loungers large enough for two. Attendants regularly pass chilled towels around the main relaxation pool and later in the afternoon, they serve fruit to guests.

Accommodations

The majority of amenities, activities, and gratuities at this resort are included in the room rate; guests will not be charged extra for the majority of amenities and activities (scroll up to the All-Inclusive Details section for more information). The Royal Hideaway features 200 air-conditioned guestrooms, all with balconies or patios furnished with two chairs and a table. Special decor touches include lighted wall recesses highlighting Mexican pottery, and dark-wood furnishings. Entertainment options include cable TV with pay movies, video-game consoles (surcharge), DVD players, and CD players. Jetted tubs, large stall showers, and twin sinks provide luxury in marble bathrooms.

Ventanas - Serving international menus for à la carte breakfasts and dinners in a room featuring dark woods, recessed ceilings, and plush linens, this restaurant offers occasional live music in the evenings. Reservations required. Dress code: Casual elegance with long pants, closed shoes, collared shirt for men. No shorts, jeans, sandals or running sport shoes; women may wear evening dress sandals.
Palazzo - This à la carte Italian dinner house provides white-linen service and commands views of the resort's grounds and the Caribbean. Both inside seating and terrace seating are available. Reservations required. Dress code: Casual elegance with long pants, closed shoes, collared shirt for men. No shorts, jeans, sandals or running sport shoes; women may wear evening dress sandals.
Spices - At breakfast, this restaurant serves the resort's only buffet meal. Later, à la carte lunches and dinners feature Mexican and Caribbean flavors. Reservations required. Azia - In a room graced by bamboo accents, Azia serves à la carte dinners of Japanese-Thai dishes. Reservations required. Dress code: Casual elegance with long pants, closed shoes, collared shirt for men. No shorts, jeans, sandals or running sport shoes; women may wear evening dress sandals.
 
Activities

The majority of recreational activities and facilities described below are included in the room rate for the Royal Hideaway (scroll up to the All-Inclusive details section for more information). Guests can try a range of land and water sports including beach soccer, bocce ball, kayaking and windsurfing, all while using the resort’s equipment. As well, two tennis courts, six swimming pools, and a fitness center with cardio and weight equipment plus spa tub and sauna, offer plenty of facilities to enjoy. Golf enthusiasts do not have to go far: the entrance to Playacar Golf Club is 150 meters (164 yards) away. The facility provides an 18-hole, par 72 championship golf course designed by Robert Von Hagge. (Golf incurs surcharges for greens fees and equipment rental.)
