Barbados - Blue Lagoon
Description / Location
Perched on the edge of a low sea bluff, Blue Lagoon is located on the seafront in the popular coastal strip of the Garden, St James, an area with a number of exclusive estates and private villas. Blue Lagoon itself is a Barbados vacation villa set back off the road and has an electric gated entrance and paved area for parking. Flanked by tall palms, it has a canary yellow exterior with traditional white shutters, giving it a charming and cheerful feel.
An imposing arched wooden front door leads into the marble hallway which, with its oversized, carved mirror and mahogany staircase is reminiscent of a grand plantation house. However, as you step down into the cream tiled, open-plan living area you will find the décor lighter and more contemporary than a traditional plantation house. The main living area is light and airy, with shutters along the front to allow a natural flow of air. French doors open out onto the terrace and sundeck and provide delightful views of the Caribbean Sea. There is a comfortable sitting area with two powder blue, three-seater sofas and a cable TV hidden in a large cabinet, and on the far side of the room a formal dining area with a long table and padded chairs that seat eight comfortably. Tucked into a corner, just outside the kitchen, is a small breakfast area. However, as there are dining options outside, most guests like to take breakfast on the terrace. Ingrid the cook, whose specialty is baked fish, encourages guests to dine wherever they wish.
The main feature of Blue Lagoon is its outside terrace and sundeck, where guests can relax in relative privacy and enjoy truly magical sea views. It is an exceptionally pretty setting. The main part of the terrace, which is enclosed by low wooden fencing to get the best of the views, has a reasonably sized plunge pool to one end (it is not a suitable setting for small children) and benefits from the shade of trees and tropical shrubbery either side of the property. Additional shade is provided by two coconut palms which are set, most unusually, within the terrace. Tucked into the southern corner of the terrace is a covered sitting area with casual wicker furnishings and a built-in wet bar, ideal for enjoying pre-dinner cocktails or sundowners. The terrace on this side of the villa has been extended with a wooden deck that overhangs the sea and which has spellbinding views along the coast and over the crystal clear waters below. Guests can enjoy alfresco meals on the deck, which has a teak table and chairs for six. The area just above the sea is reserved for sunbathing. A couple of umbrellas are provided and can be manoeuvred to suit, and there is also a barbecue there. A series of steps from the pool terrace lead down to the small lagoon-like cove below, where at low tide there is a small patch of beach (not large enough for sunbathing) and a lovely swimming and snorkeling area.
Accommodations
Blue Lagoon has three bedrooms, located upstairs. They all have marble tiled en suite bathrooms with tub/showers (the double has a shower only), are air-conditioned and have ceiling fans. first bedroom (with double bed) is a delightful corner room which forms the roof of the bar area below, and has a bow front lined with demerara shutters. The second sea view bedroom is the spacious Master bedroom, which has a dual aspect, taking in the drive from a small balcony and the ocean from a large picture window, where there are a couple of comfy chairs to curl up in. This is a very romantic room and it is dominated by a pine four poster, king size bed that is draped in muslin.
It has a cable TV. The third bedroom is located opposite the double room and adjacent to the master, off the corridor that overlooks the terrace and sea. It has twin beds and a small balcony that faces the driveway.
A small lagoon like cove below is accessed by a series of steps from the pool terrace, and has a shallow sandy entry which during low tide has a small area of beach (not large enough for sunbathing) leading to a lovely swimming and snorkeling area. The plunge pool is set into the tiled terrace and is 4.5ft deep.
Restaurants & Bars
There is a host of restaurants ranging from posh to pizzas within 15-20 minutes’ drive in either direction of Blue Lagoon, from the celeb favourite the Lone Star, about 5 minutes away, to the famous Cliff Restaurant, which will take about 20 minutes, both heading south. In Holetown itself the restaurants stand shoulder to shoulder (they gather a lively bar crowd in the evening in season and at weekends), but you will also find pizza parlours, cafés, beach bars, fast food outlets and an excellent patisserie. There is a beachfront nightclub at Sunset Crest.
Activities
The nearest golf course is Royal Westmoreland about 15 minutes drive away, which has some tee times open to outsiders in the mid morning, otherwise there are the three courses at Sandy Lane about 20 minutes away. The nearest tennis courts are located at Sugar Hill about 12 minutes drive away.
