About our Florida Keys Holidays
Just this side of paradise (and a bit south of Miami) lies a chain of coral islands. Cross the Monroe County line and you'll be in the first of the Florida Keys, Key Largo, Key West and Islamorada.
While Key Largo island is legendary for its lore of pirates and sunken treasure, today countless visitors have discovered the real treasure of Key Largo lies offshore — in its world-class diving.
Long known for the clarity of its waters, Key Largo's star diving attraction is John Pennekamp State Park, the first underwater preserve in the nation. Home to more than 600 species of Technicolor tropical fish and 40 brilliant types of coral, the park is a part of the nationally protected Florida Keys Marine Sanctuary. In addition to diving and snorkelling, the park offers guided walks, canoe trips, a glass-bottomed boat tour, picnicking, camping, fishing, boating and more.
Fresh seafood, of course, is the specialty here, and no seafood lover should leave without sampling the sumptuous bounty of the local waters. The island is also dotted with colourful shopping areas filled with "Keys-style" merchandise.
Islamorada
One of the largest towns in the Keys, is Islamorada which offers a number of attractions in addition to fabulous fishing. You can explore the wreckage of the Dutch-built ship San Pedro (located in 18 feet of water about 1.25 nautical miles south of Indian Key) or the Underwater Coral Gardens of both Upper and Lower Matecumbe Keys. Indian Key, offshore on the Atlantic side of Lower Matecumbe Key is a designated State Historic Site.
The first stop on the road down to Mile Marker 0 in Key West, Key Largo retains its own distinct island mentality, sure to delight honeymooners or family vacationers alike.
There are many ways to catch a "big 'un." If you'd like, Islamorada's charter boat captains can take you on the fishing trip of your life. But venturing out on your own in a rented boat, wading in the shallows or bridge fishing are also great ways to explore area waters.
Key West
Only 90 miles from Cuba and 150 from Miami, Key West is truly the end of the line. In a 1940 Saturday Evening Post article, Thelma Strabel wrote of Key West, "There is nothing for restless people to do. It is quiet and careless and charming." Half a century later, you'll find that Key West's charm has remained, though the pace of life has picked up quite a bit. Key West has become a place where people escape from the rat race to join the race for the freest, the "funnest" and the most flamboyant. What other place has more bars — along with more churches — per capita than anywhere else in the country?
If you prefer a more solitary vacation, you can spend your days dozing in a hammock between two palms, and your nights listening to the gentle hum of insects and the far-away beat of a reggae band. Or, if you're like most visitors, you'll take it easy during the day, enjoying the beach or Key West's shops and attractions, and spend your nights partying in its bars and nightclubs, most of which are clustered along the main strip of Duval Street.
Whatever your choice, you'll find Key West is an island that never stops. Sunset in Key West is more than a time of day; it's a happening — a special time when hundreds of people gather on the docks at Mallory Square along with musicians, entertainers and vendors. Ernest Hemingway made his home in Key West for more than 10 years, writing, frequenting local bars or fishing. Tour his home, surrounded by exotic plants and scores of the cats that the writer loved.
Key West, the southernmost point of the United States, embraces a fascinating mix of history, eccentricity and lush island charm. Civil War era forts, famous writer's homes, sidewalk cafés, and outrageous folks all add to the atmosphere of life on island time.
