4* Moana Surfrider
Description / Location
A grand, palm-fringed entrance leads to a lobby filled with Hawaiian quilts and memorabilia of old Waikiki. This historic wing shelters the hotel’s original elevator with mailbox, crooked rooms, and unsolved mysteries unsolved. A sea-view verandah opens to a courtyard shaded by a banyan tree, and to the beach beyond. Leisure travelers and celebrating couples are attracted to this hotel.
Afternoons, Waikiki’s most historic verandah becomes the setting for traditional afternoon tea. Three times a week, a Hawaiian guide reveals the history of this building. On the beach fronting the resort, beyond the pool and an oceanside restaurant, a section has been roped off for guests, where mai tais are served.
In the ocean fronting quieter sections of the beach, away from the central area, Hawaiian green sea turtles may pop their heads above the water.
Accommodations
The 793 rooms in the Sheraton Moana Surfrider are divided over the six-floor Banyan building, , the 21-floor Tower, and the seven-story Diamond wing.
In the historic wing, different floors feature different woods, including koa, maple, mahogany, and oak; the wood is repeated in old-fashioned armoires and picture frames. Rooms include reproductions of botanical prints, replicas of old lamps, high ceilings, and wicker chairs. Wood-cabinet/marble-top vanities with half-tub/showers create a Victorian seaside ambiance. Banyan rooms do not have balconies, but the large windows can be opened.
Tower rooms have furnished balconies and contemporary island decor; they include desks, granite vanities, and granite shower/tub combinations. Diamond rooms have French balconies only.
All rooms feature signature Sheraton Sweet Sleeper Beds with 13-inch pillowtop mattresses, duvets, triple sheets, and five down-and-feather pillows. All rooms are air-conditioned and nonsmoking, with compact refrigerators, and high-speed Internet access.
