Built in 1931, the hotel's baronial ambience (marble, mahogany, brass, crystal) remains intact, as does formal service from a crisply uniformed staff. Black-and-white photos and society portraits chronicle the hotel's history. Essex House includes a restaurant operated by Alain Ducasse, the renowned French chef/restaurateur, as his New York showcase. A mahogany-paneled bar/lounge with leather seating and wood-burning fireplace serves light fare and cocktails from midday to late night. A health spa and fitness center provides rejuvenation. A business center features private offices.
 
Accommodation

Essex House offers 515 guestrooms and suites with marble bathrooms in a 39-story building. Beds include pillowtop mattresses, down comforters, and nonallergenic down pillows. Activities

Central Park, across the street from Essex House, offers a variety of recreational opportunities, including ball fields, tennis courts, rowboat rentals, horseback riding, and miles of trails for hiking, biking, running, and in-line skating. Rockefeller Center's skating rink, nine blocks south, opens in winter, as does Central Park's Wollman Rink. A golf driving range is located at Chelsea Piers sports/entertainment complex on the Hudson River 1.75 miles away.
