Description / Location

Opened in 1901, the independently owned and operated Hotel Metro welcomes guests into an Art Deco lobby with mirrored columns and black-and-white photos of Greta Garbo. Service has a personal touch because most staff members have been with the hotel since it reopened in 1996 following renovation under current owners. Offering complimentary wireless Internet access, the rooftop terrace remains open year-round for working with laptop computers and photographing the Empire State Building. Evening cocktails and bar food are served on the terrace during warm weather. Complimentary Continental breakfast and 24-hour complimentary coffee and tea are provided in a lounge. An Italian-accented restaurant serves lunch weekdays and dinner daily. Greeley Square, three blocks south at Broadway, is a tribute to 19th-century New York newspaper editor Horace Greeley, who uttered the quintessentially optimistic American advice, "Go west, young man." This urban enclave includes a coffee/pastries kiosk and is a sunny place to relax in good weather.

Accommodations

The 13-story Hotel Metro offers 179 guestrooms, all with complimentary wireless Internet access. Beds have plush-top mattresses. Rooms also include desks or dining tables, minibars, and pay movies. Safes accommodate laptop computers. Marble bathrooms contain shower/tub combinations or stall showers without tubs and include Gilchrist & Soames English toiletries. The hotel does not offer cribs or rollaway beds.

A complimentary Continental breakfast and 24-hour complimentary coffee and tea are provided in a guest lounge with plasma TV adjacent to a library furnished with upholstered seating.
Metro Grill - Streetfront restaurant and bar with Italian-accented menu. Warm-wood paneling. Lunch weekdays, dinner daily.
Rooftop Terrace - Open year-round. Clear view of Empire State Building one block south. White wrought-iron tables and chairs, wooden deck. Bar service and bar menu from early evening to late night during warm-weather months. Complimentary wireless Internet access.

Activities

A complimentary fitness center contains cardio machines, a weight machine, and free weights. Central Park, one mile north, offers tennis courts, rowboat rentals, horseback riding, and miles of trails for hiking, biking, running, and in-line skating. Rockefeller Center's famed skating rink, 12 blocks away, opens in winter, as does Central Park's Wollman Rink. A golf driving range is located at Chelsea Piers, 1.5 miles west of the hotel. Neighborhood athletic clubs offer exercise classes and swimming pools.
