4* Paramount
Description / Location
A modestly priced Broadway baby for more than a decade, the Paramount continues to draw entertainment and fashion folk seeking low-cost New York City lodging. Philippe Starck's witty décor in the lobby features a low, upholstered bench that bisects the space. A quirky staircase to the mezzanine adds an unusual slant, and the mezzanine itself has quiet nooks for conversation, the Italian-accented restaurant, and a bar. The lobby has a concierge desk and a newsstand. The two bars have contrasting characters; a restaurant and a gourmet snack and coffee bar are also on the premises. The fitness center, stocked with bottled water and apples, provides free weights and machines, as well as a changing room with shower. Guests have access to a room with two computer stations and a data port for laptops, and wireless Internet access is offered for a fee.
Accommodation
The hotel has 567 small guestrooms on smoking and nonsmoking floors. White predominates in the decor with black-and-grey checkered carpeting and designer lamps. Beds are dressed with high-thread-count linens, down comforters, and pillows. Bathrooms have showers and conical stainless-steel sinks. Wireless Internet access (surcharge) is available.
Restaurants & Bars
Mezzanine Restaurant - This comfortable dining room is attractive and intimate. Open from early morning for breakfast, the restaurant also serves lunch and dinner with an Italian accent. The adjacent Library Bar is likewise low-key.
The Paramount Bar - This lounge, with street access and graffiti-covered walls, opens evenings and draws guests and locals for drinks and light dinners.
Dean & DeLuca - This independent delicatessen-coffee bar on site is ideal for quick stops for light fare from morning until late evening.
Activities
The Intrepid Sea-Air-Space Museum, on the Hudson River at 46th Street, about 4.5 blocks from the Paramount, is an unexpected find. It includes the USS Intrepid, a WWII-era aircraft carrier, the USS Growler, a missile-launching submarine, and a Concorde supersonic airliner. Exhibitions focus on sea and space exploration.
