Description / Location

Since the Mayflower opened in 1925, it has been a Washington landmark. Dignitaries and tourists walk through the block-long marble lobby with gold-leaf trimming. During the week, guests are mostly corporate travelers doing business with the corporations and law firms along Connecticut Avenue. On weekends, leisure guests arrive for weddings, galas, and other social events. 
  
Accommodations 
 
This 10-story hotel has 657 guestrooms. All have antique-reproduction furniture, pillowtop mattresses, bathrobes, and high-speed Internet access (surcharge). Silk down comforters cover the beds, and easy chairs sit near the deep-set windows overlooking the city. Marble baths include shower massage heads, tub rails, and Bath and Body Works toiletries. Guests requesting wake-up calls can have complimentary coffee, tea, or cocoa delivered. 
    
Restaurants & Bars 
 
Café Promenade - This restaurant’s remarkable features include murals by New Deal-era artist Edward Laning and a shimmering crystal chandelier. Mediterranean dishes dominate the lunch and dinner menus. The most popular meals of the power-broker set are breakfast and tea.
Town and Country - Overstuffed chairs and wood paneling give this large lounge serving lunch and dinner the feel of a private club. The menu of 101 martinis is locally famous.
Lobby Lounge - Just inside the main entrance is a small, partially enclosed alcove that houses a coffee-and-cocktail bar. Guests can sit in chairs and sofas around the bar or walk upstairs for more private seating around the gilded balcony.

Activities 
 
The hotel’s fitness center provides four exercycles, four treadmills, two cross-country ski machines, free weights, two TVs, and a mirrored wall. The hotel also offers a limited number of complimentary passes to the YMCA three blocks away. It has a spa tub, racquetball/squash courts, indoor running track, spa services, exercise classes, and a six-lane, 25-meter lap pool. The nearest golf course is Hains Point, an 18-hole course two miles away that is perched on the banks of the Potomac River. It offers a two-tier driving range as well as a miniature golf course that’s on the National Register for Historic Places.
